Thomas "Tom" Lee Cheatum
(April 27, 1935 - June 29, 2013)
Thomas "Tom" Lee Cheatum, 78, a resident of the North Plains, died Saturday evening, June 29, 2013 at Providence St Vincent Medical Center in Portland.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at St Francis Catholic Church, 39135 NW Harrington Rd. in Roy. Rite of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 8, 2013, at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove.
Tom was born on April 27, 1935, in Pueblo, CO. He was the first of six children born to Thomas N. and Helen F. (Hoffman) Cheatum. He was raised and educated in Pueblo. Tom was a truck driver all of his life. He had worked for Weicker Transfer & Storage and Rockwool Insulation, both in Pueblo, CO. Tom married his high school sweetheart, Charline Prutch, on February 5, 1953 in Raton, NM. Following their marriage, they made their home in Pueblo, CO until 1977 when they moved to Hillsboro, OR. Tom and Charline also drove long haul for several years before she died. Tom retired in 1993. Charline died on June 18, 1995, and Tom continued to live in the Hillsboro area.
He met Shirley "Marlene" Northrup-Miller on a blind date with mutual friends in 1998. They were married on August 8, 1999 and made their home on Marlene's family farm in North Plains. Tom was active on the farm and enjoyed raising beef cattle and growing hay. Family time was important to Tom, and he loved spending time with his children, step-children, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great grandchildren, and step-great grandchildren.
Tom is preceded in death by his wife Charline, his parents, granddaughter; Charlene Garrison and a step-son; Randy Miller. Survivors include his loving wife; Marlene; four children and their spouses(Tom and Bonnie Cheatum of Pueblo, CO, Tim and Betsy Cheatum of Redmond, WA, Tammy and Craig Heckenliable of Hillsboro, OR, Terry and David Garrison of Concord, CA.), four step-children and their spouses;(Rick Miller of Priest River Idaho, Linda and Mark Mason of Forest Grove, OR, Vicki and Lonnie Strode of Yamhill, OR, Keith Miller of Aloha, OR), five siblings and their spouses (Carol Bullock and Arthur of Amarillo, TX, Richard Cheatum and Linda of Redding, CA, Mike Cheatum, Pat Keen, and Charlie of Pueblo, CO, Debbie Jones and Jeff of Harker Heights, TX), sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He will also be missed by his faithful companion, Barney.
The family suggest donations in Tom's name to St. Francis Church in Roy, the Humane Society, Washington County Hospice, or a charity of the donor's choice.
