Anna Leila Saltonstall West

Anna Leila Saltonstall West, 102, a resident of Marquis Care in Forest Grove, died August 23, 2006. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at the St. Matthew Catholic Church chapel in the church office building next to the church at 447 S.E. 3rd Ave. in Hillsboro. Viewing will be from 11 AM until 11:50 AM. Lunch will follow in the parish center. Private family interment will take place at a later date.

Leila was born on January 21, 1904 in Adrian, Michigan. She was one of four children born to Annie Teresa (Lyons) and Earnest Garfield Chapman. She moved with her family to Vancouver, BC as a child and they later settled in Seattle, Washington. Leila attended several elementary schools and completed her education at Holy Angels in Seattle.

She married Raymond Offield in 1922 . They lived in Wenatchee, Washington for one year while Ray established the first radio station there and then they returned to Seattle. Mr. Offield died in 1939 of kidney failure. Leila moved to Portland and worked in the office of Iron Fireman during World War 11. On October 1, 1943, she married Freeman A. Saltonstall in Vancouver, Washington. Mr. Saltonstall's work took them to California and Texas. Their daughter, Patricia, was born while they lived in California. They returned to Portland in 1953 and settled in the Westmoreland area. She was a member of St. Agatha Parish.Mr. Saltonstall passed away in 1970. In 1972, Leila moved to HIllsboro to be closer to her daughter and family. In 1976, she moved to Forest Grove. In 1996 Leila married Willard West at St. Anthony's in Forest Grove. Mr. West died in 1998. Leila lived at Alterra Wynwood for several years and at Marquis Care for the past three and half years.

Leila was a homemaker. She also worked as a sales assistant for Meier and Frank in Portland from 1953 to 1970. She enjoyed several hobbies and interests. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing the piano, pinochle games, crossword puzzles, reading and studying languages.She swam, walked daily and danced as long as she was able. She enjoyed dance classes, dances and singing with the C Notes at the senior center. She loved being with her family and friends.

Leila enjoyed traveling to many states including Hawaii. The trip that delighted her the most was a tour of Ireland, England and Scotland with her sister. They visited their mother's birthplace and cousins in Bohola, County Mayo, Ireland .

She was preceded in death by her brother Thomas Chapman and her sisters Katherine Nichols and Patricia Doherty.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law; Patricia L. Jackson and Byron E. Jackson ( HIllsboro, OR), two grandsons; Christopher Jackson and Cameron Jackson (Hillsboro,OR) Nephews Gerald Nichols ( Seattle, WA), Richard Nichols (Caryl) (Lynnwood, WA) and niece Margaret Palmer (Seattle, WA), and numerous grand nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that donations be placed in Leila's name to St. Matthew School Endowment Fund ; 447 S.E. 3rd Hillsboro, OR 97123 or the Forest Grove Senior Center.

Leila's family extends their deepest gratiude to the Marquis Care Staff for their loving care of Leila over the years. They also extend their appreciation to the Washington County Hospice staff for their kind and attentive involvement.
