N. Wilberta Teeter

Wilberta W. Teeter, 93, a 47-year-resident of the Forest Grove community died Monday morning, March 25, 2014 at her home in Portland. 

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Forest Grove  United Church of Christ (UCC); 2032 College Way in Forest Grove.

Christian burial and vault interment has taken place at Forest View Cemetery in Forest Grove.


Wilberta was born on April 6, 1920 in Clarkston, WA.  She was one of four daughters born to William and Estella (McGee) Winniford. She started her life with her family along the Snake River where they had a land grant claim. Here she attended school with several of the local children in each other's homes.  Wilberta's mother and aunt were the teachers.  As a young girl, Wilberta moved with her family to Enterprise, OR where she graduated from Enterprise High School Class of 1938. She then attended the University of Oregon graduating with a Bachelors of Arts degree.  She eventually received a Masters-Equivalent Degree in Library Science in 1965 from the U. of O in Eugene.


She met her future husband, Truman E Teeter, while working at the library at Sacred Heart Hospital School of Nursing in Eugene.  They began dating, and were married July 8, 1949 in Eugene. They made their home in Eugene until 1965 when they moved to Forest Grove. Truman died in 2001, but Wilberta continued to live in Forest Grove until 2012.  Then she moved closer to her daughter in Portland.


Wilberta was first and foremost a loving wife and mother to her family. She had worked off and on a librarian at the School of Nursing at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene.  She retired from Pacific University in 1990 where she had worked as the librarian/media specialist at the School of Optometry. Wilberta was active in her church, the Forest Grove UCC. She enjoyed gardening, reading and traveling with her family. She was an avid baseball fan and would attend all of the Pacific University home baseball games and devoted Saturday mornings to baseball on TV.


She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Truman, a daughter, Ann Marie, and two sisters: Carmen Yokum and Maxine Murphy.


Survivors include her sister, Donna Shira , her daughter: Martha McGuirk of Portland, OR, three grandchildren: Rebecca, David and Tom, and three great grandchildren: Jackson, Stella and Riley.
