Forest Grove, Oregon
She was second of the sixteen children born to Theodore Mathias and Petronella J. VanDyke.
By the time she reached 8 years old, Martha was cleaning house, helping to prepare family meals, making homemade bread, and help care for her four younger siblings. But when harvest in the fields beckoned, Martha was there to help with berry and hop picking.
Martha learned to play the piano, and one day her dad decided they need to start a family band. Martha was given a horn to play for her part.
At 19, Martha was invited by a cousin to move to Portland and live in the St Vincent Hospital Nurses quarters and worked in the hospital. They would travel to Verboort on the weekends to attend the dances. At one of those dances she met Joe Waibel, and they later married in St Paul Oregon.
Joe and Martha made a home in a small house on the farm that was currently owned by Joe's parents. Joe worked on the farm until they purchased it a few years later.
Martha loved her flowers, and won numerous ribbons when she entered them in the county fair every year. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans and doilies, sewing receiving blankets and bibs to give to the next generation babies.
After they sold the cows and retired, Martha and Joe enjoyed traveling, fishing and snowbirding in Arizona where they learned new crafts to make to the time pass.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; Joe, daughter; Janice Rosema, brothers; Wilbert, Edmund, Gerald, Leslie, Carl, Maurice, and Richard VanDyke and two sisters; Eileen McMahon and Ethel Duyck.
